Diet & Nutrition

For any professional athlete, diet and nutrition obviously play a hugely important role, and it’s certainly no different for rugby players.

Due to the amount of training involved in my daily routine, it’s vital that I take in the right foods and liquids at the right times to enable me to reap the benefits of training. If I don’t get the right nutrients in the right quantities into my body I can quickly pick up illnesses, muscle strains, or severe fatigue through the daily strain I put on my body; which would of course effect my ability to train and play.

Whilst personally I eat relatively large quantities in my diet I wouldn’t recommend others follow suite. I burn a lot of calories in training that dictates I probably need to eat more than the average person. It’s really about getting the right sort of fuel intake to allow you to perform daily.

Whilst remaining disciplined to a diet, it’s also massively important to reward yourself for all of your hard work and effort once in a while. Treat yourself once a week to something that you normally shouldn’t have too much of but really enjoy.

However, the importance of a healthy diet and nutrition isn’t solely confined to professional sport. In any walk of life it’s important to manage your diet in conjunction with your individual lifestyle. In my opinion part of life should be about having the ability to deliver your best performance and be the best version of yourself when you need it. Fuelling your body to perform when you need it to, whether physically or mentally; is all part of your preparation to achieve whatever you aim to achieve in life.
